The construction of a new clubhouse at the K Club, home of this year's Ryder Cup, included extensive use of a variety of ceiling systems from Ecophon. The extensive and stylish new facilities were built by Cedar Construction and Brian O'Halloran and Associates were architectural consultants. They were responsible for specifying the Ecophon systems, whilst Mayford Ceilings was the specialist installer.

A large area is covered with high performance tiles and Ecophon's curved L-line panels. The latter were most strikingly employed to form a coffered ceiling within the main restaurant. L-line panels were also employed to produce a totally different effect in the function room. Here, they take the form of a down-stand beam at the point where the space can be divided for separate meeting areas.

For the K Club's new Pro Shop, Ecopon's Focus DG 'floats' beneath the suspension grid. A series of different-sized tiles was used to produce a pattern that is designed to look like tartan. Hygiene Advance tiles were preferred for the changing rooms, shower areas and the kitchen due to their enhanced tolerance of damp conditions and repeated clean-down.

The project architect for Brian O'Halloran and Associates, Mr Dermott Brennan, said: 'Our priority was to use a tile system that was not recognisable as a standard or even a demountable system while also allowing full access to ceiling spaces. The 1200 mm square tiles removed the 'recognition' factor of standard ceilings and the downstand feature tile tied in with the overall design concept. One further advantage was that the tile could be installed before the building was heated, giving much needed programme advantages.'
