 | | WORKSPACE DRAWING MANAGER DELIVERS SIGNIFICANT CONSISTENCY GAINS AND COST SAVINGS | | | Union Square Software | | 25/10/2006 | | | Union Square Software has launched a new version of its 'Workspace' knowledge management software to integrate CAD drawings into an organisation's document management system. Of particular importance to organisations that author CAD drawings in the construction supply chain - such as architects and structural engineers - the Workspace Drawing Manager can deliver significant consistency gains and time-saving throughout the course of a project. Working drawings can be updated with revision and date, zipped and their issue recorded in a few easy steps. This level of functionality can save many man-hours and allow designers to work right up to their deadlines and still issue on time.
Commenting on the new offering Will Yandell, Commercial Director at Union Square says, 'Drawing Manager is a significant 'missing piece of the jigsaw' for users of CAD. As any CAD drawing can often entail any number of pages due to interior and exterior layers, work-in-progress CAD drawings often fall outside of document management processes with files simply residing in a hierarchy of shared folders until issue.'
The Workspace Drawing Manager brings a much higher level of visibility and control by fully integrating these files into the rest of the system. All the drawings associated with a particular project are displayed on a Drawing Register page from which the user can filter and search, open the drawings, see the most recently issued revisions, create new drawings and issue new revisions. Completely web based, the system allows drawings to be accessed at any time away from the office. A global search of drawings is also now available which allows multi-national organisations to search across global projects based on a particular criterion - for example, a search across all projects for in-depth roofing details.
Yandell continues, 'This new functionality of Workspace will transform the way that project managers and those involved in the roll-out interact with the CAD which are so vital to the successful delivery of the project. It provides project managers with complete visibility of the progress at any stage of the programme, enabling them to see at a glance which drawings are ready for issue and which are in progress. Streamlining the development process further still, Drawing Manager also allows a drawing to be linked to more than one register allowing, for example, the same site plan to be used in multiple related projects.'
Covering all stages of the drawing process from initial creation through to document issue, Drawing Manager has a drawing creation 'wizard' to ensure that drawings are not only created with speed and convenience, but also that they conform to defined CAD standards. The revision number of drawings is controlled by the system which means that, once a revision has been issued, the drawing will be automatically moved on to its next revision.
Yandell concludes, 'Organisations using Workspace Drawing Manager can rest easy knowing that, not only does it enable them to save a considerable number of man-hours on projects while being instrumental in the on-time delivery of those projects, it also integrates directly with the Workspace issuing module to provide rapid and fully auditable document issues.'
Union Square's Workspace software provides companies in the construction supply chain with a centralised library system enabling them to easily capture, store and retrieve company documentation through a single system and interface. A search engine allows employees to find information using key words or catalogued information, meaning less time spent searching for documents. | |
